On a scale from 1 to "do you like soap", how bad of an idea is this?

For £500 these are awfully tempting

So insurance continues to be a bollock ache but my sister has graciously offered to have the policy in her name because she has 9 years of no claim bonuses or in other words, over 50% off. However not only is this properly illegal since it would be my car but it puts her NCBs at risk. So yay or nay on dodgy insurance agreements?

if you are prepared to face the consequences then sure go for it, pretty much every young driver has done it at least once in their life

For you, it will save you money until your next claim gets denied for fraud and you get sued by the other party.

For your sister, she gets all the same long-term risks but none of the short-term benefits.

Definitely don’t do it.

You may get away with it for a while but if you get caught you will likely have higher premiums and excess when you do and it will also harm her policy.

If the car was in her name then you could possibly get away with it for longer but as it stands the first thing the police officer will say is:-

“Is this your car sir? Can I see some proof of I.D. please? If the car is yours sir, why is the policy in your sister’s name with you as a named driver?, would you mind coming with me and taking a seat in the back of my car while I look at your details please.”

Do you know how bad it would be for my sister if I get caught? As far as I am concerned what happens to me is irrelevant.

Assume she’ll be as liable as you for any damages since she is party to the fraud.

I cannot say as I have never been caught participated in such an idea, however I guess it can range from being declined on future insurance applications to possible jail time for fraud?

I didn’t even think about it from that angle.

Can you have the car in your parents name with you listed as a secondary driver? That's what my parents did until when I first started driving, saved tons of money.

That’s what I’m talking about but my sister instead. Problem is that having me named as a secondary driver when in reality it is my car is super illegal in the UK and the consequences are harsh. Really harsh.

What if you had the car titled in her name? I didn't technically own my first car even though I paid for the whole thing because I had it titled in my moms name, so I could save on insurance in high school.

I’d have to discuss it with her and what to do about the car’s main address.

Okay, because AFAIK that would be totally legal, but you might want to check with someone more familiar with the laws in your area.

I should move to California but I have a crippling fear of the landscape randomly catching fire and running out of water.

You should, a few months ago there was this one area that was flooding AND on fire. Beware California.

Youll get away with it no problem provided you dont have to claim. Though you wont build a NCB and continue to have this problem for years.

Just start off with something cheap and fun first. Then as you build NCB you can move on. I have 2 year NCB and now insure two cars for less than it costs some people for one when they start out.

There is no cheap(mainly this) and fun for me. I’m paying more than some people have paid over their entire driving life.

The way I look at it is the insurance companies will screw you over regardless what you drive until they suddenly decide you are a sane and rational person. Do everything as you should and put it under your name so your record builds.

Pretty sure we’ve done this at multiple points in the past to no ill effect. I was still the main driver on my little Vauxhall Corsa when my cousin crashed it into a Fiat Punto after a year or two of driving. All that did was ruin my no claims, although she wasn’t at fault.

Some policies let named drivers earn their own no claims bonus (I know admiral does this). Worth checking out otherwise it’ll be ages until you can afford to get your own policy.

n.b. actually, thinking about this I think my first 3ish years of driving was done on a policy like this...
